Information on Otoplasty or Ear Reshaping Surgery

Ears that protrude can often cause great emotional stress

Ear reshaping surgery is also known as otoplasty and is a surgical procedure that is carried out to reduce the size of the ears, reshape the ears, or reset protruding ears so that they sit closer to the head.

This very straightforward procedure can be carried out on both adults and children who feel their lives are being negatively affected by the appearance of their ears. Many people are very self-conscious about their ears, particularly if they stick out rather than sit flat against the side of the head, and ear reshaping surgery can help.

Surgery can resize, reshape and reposition the ears for those people who are unhappy with the way they look. The procedure to pin back ears is really simple and it will often be performed as a day case, meaning you won’t have to stay in hospital overnight.

The shape, size or positioning of the ears can make a huge difference to whether a person has confidence in their appearance or not, and for many years people have been choosing to have ear reshaping surgery to increase their self-confidence.

Ear reshaping (otoplasty) is one of the oldest cosmetic procedures – with a history that dates back to the late 19th century and is known for boosting confidence.

Ear reshaping can totally change the overall appearance of the face and the recovery of this procedure is very quick.

Your nurse counsellor at Profile Perfection will discuss all of your options, the procedure itself, answer all of your questions and concerns and assist you to make the initial steps toward surgery.

Your surgeon will advise you about the surgery, discuss your medical history (when you are to discontinue or resume activities like smoking, or taking aspirin or any other medication). They will ensure that you are medically fit for the procedure.

You will be able to present your expectations to your plastic/cosmetic surgeon.

The surgery plan will be made between you and your plastic/cosmetic surgeon, but the final decision whether to have the surgery is always yours and should not be made in a rush. Contact with your nurse counsellor at Profile Perfection is vital through these stages of decision making.

Make a decision when you are satisfied with the information you have received.

The evening before surgery, we would recommend that you wash your hair.

The bandage will be on for 7-10 days continuously and during this time you will not be able to wash your hair.

The plastic surgeon will visit you in your room and may mark the ears with a pen in preparation for your ear reshaping surgery. Your plastic surgeon will also obtain your final consent and answer any last minute questions you may have.

Frequently, local anaesthesia and intravenous sedation are used for patients undergoing ear surgery, although general anaesthesia may be desirable in some instances.

The plastic surgeon will remove some of your skin and reshape the cartilage from behind the ears.

The ears are then stitched into the new position with the incision marks cleverly concealed in the natural crease behind the ear.

The ear reshaping surgery normally takes 2-3 hours to complete.

Ear reshaping surgery sets prominent ears back closer to the head or reduces the size of large ears.

If your problem is protruding ears, the supporting tissue of the ears, called cartilage, is reshaped in order to position your ears closer to your head.

This  is usually accomplished through incisions placed behind the ears.

Subsequent scars will be concealed in the natural skin crease.

In some cases, especially in ears that need to be reduced in size or are protruding in the middle, an external incision in the front (outside surface) of the ear will be necessary. Usually these are placed in areas where they will heal in a more inconspicuous manner.

In ear reductions, skin, as well as cartilage, will most often need to be removed.

There may be some residual bruising after your ear reshaping surgery.

You should avoid sleeping on your sides in order to reduce ear pressure.

You will need to wear bandages around your ears for about a week, at which time your stitches will be removed.

Once bandages have been removed, you will be able to see the results immediately.

When sutures are also removed, we recommend regular hair washes/showers to clean behind the ear – Avoiding rubbing, as the ear will remain tender for a while.

For a further 7-10 nights we recommend you wear a sports headband to protect the ears whilst in bed.

It is very important that you attend the follow up post-surgery appointment to care for your wound and see your plastic surgeon post-operatively to make sure that you are healing well.

You will have your own personal Profile Perfection nurse counsellor both before and after your procedure to support you and answer any questions you may have.

Will otoplasty surgery be painful?

The majority of patients do not consider otoplasty surgery to be painful surgery. Any discomfort responds rapidly to oral pain medications.

Will there be scarring after undergoing ear surgery?

Incisions are placed behind the ears. Subsequent scars will be concealed in the natural skin crease. In some cases, especially in ears that need to be reduced in size or are protruding in the middle 1/3 of the ear, an external incision in the front (outside surface) of the ear will be necessary. Usually these are placed in areas where they will heal in an inconspicuous manner.

How long does the treatment take?

What type of care will I need after treatment?

Will I need pain relief following treatment?

Will I have swelling or bruising and can these be treated?

These are just some of the commonly asked questions but please feel free to ask your nurse counsellor at Profile Perfection for more information…
